We’re now five matches into the 2018 NRL season and the St. George Illawarra Dragons are sitting pretty at the top of the table.
The 2010 Premiership winners have been sensational so far this campaign, notching 154 offensive points whilst conceding just 60. Paul McGregor will be quietly confident of leading his side to the NRL Grand Final this year and it would be foolish to write the Dragons off on current form.
St. George Illawarra were sublime in their Round Two victory over the Cronulla Sharks and that result gave the entire fan base a huge lift. The Dragons produced a monumental effort in the second half to come out on top and they have gone from strength to strength since then.
With a few favourable fixtures approaching in the coming weeks, the Dragons could find themselves out on their own at the top of the table. Melbourne Storm, the NRL defending champions after winning the 2017 Grand Final, have failed to inspire confidence this year – the Dragons will be eyeing up their crown.
According to the latest odds listed on Oddschecker, punters can back St. George Illawarra at 11/2 to go on and lift the NRL title. McGregor’s men are on an upward trajectory and a playoff push should be their primary objective.
The competition pacesetters are playing some scintillating rugby and the Red V will take some stopping. McGregor commented on the change in mood across the club and fans are now believing that a successful season could be on the cards.

At this moment in time, the New Zealand Warriors – level on points with the Dragons – are looking like the main danger in the pursuit of NRL glory. Expecting a straight-up dogfight between the Dragons and the Warriors would be unwise though; you cannot write the Melbourne Storm or Sydney Roosters off just yet.
Australia’s most successful clubs will bounce back after a slow start to the campaign and the Dragons will be wary of an onslaught in the coming months. Whether the Dragons go on to win the trophy or not, one thing is for sure: this has all the makings of a very entertaining NRL season.
St George Illawarra have plenty of potential and this could be a year to remember for their passionate supporters. A message to the rest of the NRL; keep an eye on the Dragons this season; it could be their time to shine on the big stage.
